Taking the first step to begin psychotherapy can be one of the best investments you make in yourself or your relationships. But how do you know if talking to a psychologist is right for you? The best way is to schedule an appointment so that we can address your concerns in a careful and thoughtful manner. In the meantime, here are some guidelines I can offer you:

  • If you are experiencing worry, perfectionism, poor self-esteem, or have trouble dealing with others, you may have clinical anxiety.
  • If you feel blue, have low energy, have lost interest in activities you used to enjoy, have difficulty sleeping, or have gained or lost weight, you may be clinically depressed.
  • Do you believe that your present difficulties might be related to childhood experiences of abuse or neglect?
  • Have you experienced a traumatic event, such as an automobile accident, loss of a significant person in your life, or been victimized in some way?
  • Do you feel stuck in your present life, or are you having trouble making the life changes you want?

If any of these concerns describe your experience, see the "Individual Psychotherapy" page to learn more.

Relationships in the 21st century begin with high expectations yet around 50% end in failure. To be one of the winning couples, learning new skills of connection is critical. Here are some things to think about if you are considering marital (relationship) therapy:

  • On average, unhappy couples wait six years before seeking help with problems in their relationship. This means the average couple lives with unhappiness too long, and that can lead to emotional distance, loss of intimacy or giving up.
  • Discussions that escalate into arguments instead of getting resolved are a predictor of divorce. Learning to create a dialogue in which each partner is heard predicts greater intimacy so that love can flourish.
  • Happier couples set high standards for each other and their relationship. "Sweeping concerns under the rug" and "not rocking the boat" are prescriptions for unhappy relationships.

If you are considering marital (relationship) therapy, see the "Couples Counseling" page to learn more.

Please call or e-mail to discuss your concerns or to schedule an appointment. Remember that e-mail is not secure, so please call to discuss personal details.
